Pruning

The growth rate of plants varies greatly, so the way plants should be pruned varies greatly. Large pruning will disrupt the balance of the aquarium, which is why smaller and more frequent pruning is preferable. This way the aquarium will also look presentable at all times.

Stem plants (1) are pruned by continuously cutting the longest shoots just above a leaf at a low height and replanting the shoot in the group. New shoots will form from the cut stem.

Ground cover and mosses (2) are cut back hard like a lawn to ensure rapid new growth.

Echinodorus, bulbs and tubers (3) are trimmed by removing the outermost leaves in the rosette and/or leaves that shade the surface.

Cryptocoryne (4) should have yellow or damaged leaves removed. Entire plants should be removed when the group becomes too dense.

Offshoots (5) are cut away if they invade surrounding plants. The oldest plants can be replaced with offshoots now and then.

Rhizome plants (6) are slow-growing. The rhizome stem itself is cut between a set of leaves when the plant becomes too large. New shoots will form from the leaf base.
